MONEY SAVING TIPS

Compiled for VFMR Tenants

Your Power Bill. If you buy your electricity from Kinston, we all know how expensive it can be... Then again, all utilities are expensive if we aren't careful in our use. Try the following. They work!
Don't "pick n choose".. take your time and look at all these suggestions...

Heat Pump/Central Air/Heat. Set temp at or just below your "comfort level". ...do NOT lower/raise (this causes the Heat Strips to activate!). Going away for several days? ...do NOT change the thermostat settings...this is non-productive and WILL cost you more of your hard earned money! Keep it set on the same temp, regardless of being away from home.
Central Air/Heat Systems. Keep the filter clean by using inexpensive 30-day filters. If you don't change the filter every 30-days, there goes more of your $$! The system cannot effectively exchange air and could damage the system! We recommend you avoid the expensive/thick "allergy" type filters. They reduce the air flow and do not effectively reduce interior allergins [regular dusting does a much better job]. So, what do you buy? Buy the 5-pack thirty-day filters...They are inexpensive, do not restrict airflow and protect the system.
Coffee-Makers Constant Hot Water. If you love your "java" and use a Bunn-type coffee maker, TURN IT OFF! Do not keep power to the unit... Just turn it on before you plan to brew your coffee. It's just like a miniture hot water heater...which brings that point forward. ELECTRIC HOT WATER HEATERS are either the first or second most expensive appliance (to operate) in your home. This may be a bit aggrevating, but turn off power to the unit ...Turn it back on 30-minutes before you need to shower... Wash all clothes in cold-water.
Interior Lighting. Change/remove all incandescent light bulbs for the newer LED bulbs. Yes, they are much more expensive, but they do not "blow" in a few months. They carry a multi-year warranty. Day comes you move, REPLACE the expensive LED bulbs with new/fresh incandescent bulbs (while you can... EPA is in the process of BANNING production and sale of the incandescent light bulbs). Please do NOT USE CFL bulbs (the one's that look like a cork screw).
Unplug Instant-On Appliances. You are burning through your monthly budget and you aren't even watching a TV show!! Just plug 'em in when you want to watch a particular show. ANYTHING that is plugged in, even though it's turned "OFF" is still consuming some electricity!

OTHER WAYS TO SAVE YOUR MONEY... OR BLOW IT!
Water Usage & Sewer Fees. The City of Kinston recently announced impending water and sewer rate INCREASES! Ask yourself, "How often do I run the washing machine?" If you have a dishwasher, same question... OBTW, if you wash clothes with hot water and/or use a "Drying Cycle" with the dishwasher (some call it Heated Drying), guess what$ CHA-CHING! More of YOUR money "out the door"!
